Ok, so BrightKite is less "helpful" and more "fun," but work with me here.

BrightKite is a social application that lets you check in to any location and see who is checked in around you. You can do this either with text messages from your phone, or from any browser (including your Smart Phone browser if you want to save on your text messages). And, if you're checking in at home, for example, but don't want people to know your address, you can set your status to Private and allow only your "trusted" friends to see your address.

But why would you want to do that?

Mostly, it's a social application. If you're a writer like me, you're probably also inherently a people-watcher. It's another way to watch people and stay in touch with your friends and acquaintances. If you use Twitter, it's even cooler, since you can set BrightKite to update Twitter with your check-ins or posts.

Another plus is that you get to see what everyone else who has ever checked in to the same spot had to say. Sometimes you'll get restaurant reviews, or pictures of past events, or secrets about a place you might never have known. It's like a world-wide Easter egg hunt where anyone can leave presents to be found. I love being the first to say something useful about a place.

BrightKite is still in private beta, but if you think you might want to try it out, drop me an email. I have 5 invitations left on my account and they go to the first five responders.

EDIT: As of right now this morning, this project is fully funded! Thank you to everyone who donated! Please consider looking around some more at DonorsChoose.org and helping a teacher fund a project. Thank you!

I thought you might be interested in "Oh Say Can You See When I Write On The Board?," a DonorsChoose.org project.

Adam, the project designer and requestor, is a friend of mine from college. He just posted a really touching blog about his late aunt, and I think the best way to honor her is to fully fund this project. If you're willing to give to a great cause, please check this out and donate what you can. Thanks!

This and all other proposals at DonorsChoose.org have been submitted by public school teachers who seek resources that will help their students learn. The New York Times has profiled DonorsChoose.org as "the future of philanthropy." Please help students in need by clicking on the link above!

Contributions are tax-deductible, and the donors receive photographs, student thank-you notes, and a teacher letter for the project they choose to sponsor.

What an enjoyable read! I loved the damaged characters and their redemption stories. Also, this book has one of the best endings I've read in a long time. The bad guys get their comeuppance and the good guys all get what they deserve! Loved it!
Beluga WhaleImage by Ava Lowery via FlickrOne of my favorite picture books when I was little featured pages and pages of whales. By the time my sister and I outgrew that book, my mom must have hated it, because I think we read it almost every night. One of the whales in the book was a beluga whale, and the only picture I've ever seen of a beluga whale was in that book. I don't ever remember seeing another one, on TV, in another book, or anywhere. Probably because I never looked. But I remember exactly what that picture of that beluga whale looked like.

Today, at the Georgia Aquarium, I saw an actual real-life beluga whale. He was beautiful. It was like staring at some fairytale creature from my childhood, watching it jump off the page of a magical book and come to life right before my eyes. He swam and blew bubbles and sang, and he looked like a big white angel to me. It was one of the most incredible things I have ever seen. Breathtaking, beautiful, larger than life.

Do you have a storybook moment that became real life to you? Did you get as wacky and emotional about it as I did? (I swear, I nearly cried, watching that big, beautiful white whale dance.)
