30 Before 30: An Update

I’m currently working on a list of 30 things I want to do before I turn 30 on May 5, 2011. Thought it was time for a little update on how I’m doing!

1. Learn to play an instrument. I’ve dabbled a bit on the guitar, with Robbie’s help, but not enough. In fact, it’s been weeks since I’ve played and the callouses are coming off my fingers. Gotta get back on that.

2. Make an article of clothing. This one intimidates me. I have not begun.

3. Read Lord of the Rings. I started this week and so far I love it. I didn’t think I would, honestly. I tried to read it once before and just couldn’t do it. Maybe it’s that I have a longer attention span now, or get more sleep or something, but I’m enjoying it.

4. Be in a musical. Savoyards in the Spring, maybe. Anyone have any other local area musical productions to suggest (preferably featuring a chorus that will take people like me who aren’t necessarily great actresses/singers)?

5. Host a party for friends I haven’t seen in a long time. Still need to do this. Discussed a flannel-themed party because we all wore far too much flannel in high school.

6. See the cherry blossoms in DC. On my calendar!

7. Take an art class. Wake Tech has some art classes I’m thinking about. Maybe a drawing class in the fall.

8. Grow my own tomatoes. I’m working on it!

9. Sing karaoke (in public). Also a scary one, which I haven’t thought much about.

10. Cancel satellite TV. DONE!

The Planning

It took a while to set the wedding date since Sonja and Robbie had to work around Robbie’s BMX racing schedule. They joked that they would have to just get married at the track! Finally, Robbie and Sonja settled on October 2, 2004. They decided that Sonja would plan the wedding (quote from Robbie: “All I want to do is show up.”) and Robbie would plan the honeymoon (quote from Sonja: “Is it done yet? Do you have any ideas? Do you need any help? Should I call a travel agent?). Sonja had finished planning the wedding in July, but Robbie hadn’t even started the honeymoon plans!

Robbie and Sonja took a break from wedding planning in February to adopt a new member of their little family, Sydney the black lab mix. They adopted her on February 14, 2004 (Valentine’s Day!) from the Durham County Animal Shelter.

7 Productivity Tools You’re Probably Not Using

I like to think of myself as efficient. Efficient may have a bit of laziness tied into it, to be honest– I don’t want to work any harder than I have to in order to get something done. In this get-it-now era, there are a whole lot of ways to cut down on the time it takes to get things done, and most of them don’t hurt the quality of the task at all– in fact, a lot of them improve it.

So, here are 7 productivity tools that you’re probably not using, at least to their full extent.

1. Feed readers. If you are spending ages going around to all of your favorite blogs one by one each day, you are livin’ in the ’90s. Get on the train and get yourself a feed reader. My reader of choice is Google Reader. Subscribe to all of the blogs you read, then check Google Reader on your device of choice (my personal favorite is on my cell phone in the check-out line) and read all new blog posts from one spot. No more hopping from blog to blog to see who’s written something new.

If you are way obsessed with keeping up with your social networks, and you’re not following too many people, you can put your Twitter feed or whatever other social feed in Google Reader, too. Be careful, though. If you follow too many people it quickly becomes overwhelming, and then it’s not efficient anymore because you won’t use it.
