~About Sonja & Robbie~
ABOUT SONJA: Sonja is a California-turned-Carolina girl from Durham, North Carolina. She graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in 2003 and now works at UNC’s Neuroscience Center as an administrative assistant. She enjoys reading and beach trips in her spare time.
ABOUT ROBBIE: Robbie is a North Carolina native from Saxapahaw (between Chapel Hill and Greensboro). He works at Duke University in the IT department. Robbie enjoys BMX racing, skiing, and computers.
HOW THEY MET: The happy couple met when Sonja was a junior at Carolina and Robbie worked at Carolina’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication in the IT department. The “first date” was coffee at the Daily Grind by Student Stores and an evening walk around the beautiful campus in April of 2002. They never did kiss on the bench under the Davie Poplar, as Carolina lovers are wont to do, but they can always go back later!
A few weeks after they “officially” started dating, Sonja headed off to work at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota for the summer. They missed each other so much that they called each other at least once a day, and wrote several letters back and forth each week. Sonja realized while she was there that Robbie was the man she wanted to marry (and she told her sister about it in one of the letters she wrote that summer!). Sonja cut her job for the summer short to come back to Chapel Hill and be with Robbie. After that, they were virtually inseparable.
~The Proposal~
WHEN THEY GOT ENGAGED: December 24, 2003
HOW IT HAPPENED: Robbie gave Sonja the best Christmas present ever! On Christmas Eve 2003, he handed her a wrapped package, which turned out to be a purse, then instructed her to look inside, where she found a beautiful engagement ring. Of course she said yes (through blubbery and unattractive tears of joy)!
