For those of you who don’t follow my Twitter stream at 7 pm EDT every Friday night, you may not know that I am following along with The Popcorn Dialogues, a blog and podcast by Jenny Crusie and Lucy March. Basically, they’re watching a whole bunch of romantic comedies and then ripping them apart to find out why they work (or don’t).

I don’t want to do an analysis every week on my blog, because that’s what they do on their blog and podcast, but I have some stuff I want to say about some of the movies and I’m allowed to do that since I’m the writer here. Live with it. Jenny and Lucy have divided the movies up into eras, and since we watched the last movie in the Depression Era set on Friday, I thought it would be a good time for me to summarize.

Watch This

I’m super duper busy and instead of abandoning my blog for today, I’m performing some sleight of hand and plunking you down in front of some videos so that you won’t think I’m ignoring you. (I’d be an awesome parent.)

And, because no one wants to watch me, these are all videos of cute widdle aminals. Enjoy.

On farm tour day, we saw this little cutie at Maple View Farms (of the famous ice cream):

I took this video at our favorite plant nursery, For Garden’s Sake in Chatham County. They have plants, goats, llamas, ducks, peacocks, and swans– the swans bite.

It’s summer-time, officially now, since Memorial Day weekend is over. Summer-time means lots of great things, but it also means the disruption of some of your regularly scheduled entertainment. Your TV shows are in summer reruns, Blockbuster and Netflix are looking a little worn out what with all the big movies being in the theaters for the summer, and if you were in school, you don’t have that to take up your time for the summer either. (Well, unless you’re a fortunate soul like me and get to take classes in the summer, too– I can hardly stand the joy.)

But I’m here to save you from a summer of boredom! Join me in 3 fun things to do with a group. And they’re romance-related because, well, that’s what I like and this is my blog… You’ll have to be a little bit of a joiner, but it probably won’t hurt too much.

I’m writing this post even at the risk of being one of those scary fangirls. I am possibly a borderline Indiana Jones fangirl, even though the vast majority of the time I can’t work up the energy to be a fangirl about anything at all. Anyway, if that’s what I am, I guess I can own it, since I can’t think of a single other thing I qualify as “fangirl” for. Make fun if you must. Onward.

Lots of people skip the 2nd in the Indiana Jones trilogy, The Temple of Doom. Admitedly, it’s not my favorite either. My mom doesn’t like it because it’s gross, and I think it definitely has some darker stuff in it than the other two movies do, so I understand that reasoning. The reason I never liked it, though, was that it seemed incongruous. Indiana Jones wasn’t the Indiana Jones I’d come to know and love (despite his repeatedly choosing career over love) in Raiders of the Lost Ark, and he’s certainly not the lovable guy from The Last Crusade who makes jokes with his dad and falls for… well, that’s a whole different blog post.

**SPOILER ALERT** Lots of Temple of Doom spoilers follow. I’m assuming you’ve already seen it and decided your opinion on it. If you haven’t seen it, watch it first, then come back here and read this.

Cover of "Jaws (30th Anniversary Edition)...

You all know I’m a big fan of Alexandra Sokoloff and her writing tips. One of her first tips is to come up with 10 movies to study. Here, I’ll just paste it from her blog:

To teach yourself story structure, you start by making a list of 10 movies and books in the genre you’re writing in and/or that you feel are similar in structure to the story you want to write. From this list you are going to develop your own personalized story structure workbook.

So here are the movies on my action genre list, and my attempt at log lines for those:

**SPOILER ALERT**

These log lines are spoilers, so skip down past the list if you don’t want to see.

10. Double Jeopardy, 1999 – A woman is framed for murder and loses everything, including her son, but now that she’s out of prison, she can really kill her husband, without risk of further consequences.

9. Jaws, 1975 – When an insatiable great white shark terrorizes the townspeople of Amity Island, a police chief, a grizzled shark hunter and an oceanographer seek to destroy it.
