#20 Write a Movie Script: Coming Soon!

ScriptFrenzy starts on Friday, and this year, my bestest buddy Skye and I are in. We’ve had many a plot-session, have patted each other generously on the back numerous times for our genius ideas, and are ready to get to writin’. What are we writing, you ask? See for yourself:

Yes, I spent an hour making that while I could have been plotting. Shut it. It’s part of the creative process. We both watched all the seasons of Veronica Mars around the same time, and we both went, “Noooooo!” when the season finale was over. So this is our attempt to fix the ending the way we want it.

Personal Themes

Alexandra Sokoloff is doing her usual NaNoWriMo prep posts on her blog. The theme assignment is this:

Make a list of your personal THEMES – the ones you vibrate to in other people’s stories, and the ones you keep coming back to in your own stories, over and over again. And, what particular themes do you see working in your WIP?

So, here are the themes I seem to be drawn to, judging from my writing and from the movies I really love:

  • Career/duty vs. love/happiness/paradise (Shooting Stars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Mr & Mrs Smith, Kate & Leopold, Star Trek: Generations)
  • Friends as lovers– Does it work? (“Love in Shadow,” When Harry Met Sally, The Wedding Singer)
  • Death is only the beginning. (The Mummy, Van Helsing, Return to Me)
  • Fish out of water (“Love in Shadow,” The Little Mermaid)
  • Prejudice/inequality (“Love in Shadow,” X-Men)
  • What makes someone human? What constitutes humanity? (“Cat in the Mist,” X-Men)
  • Is love enough? (Shooting Stars, Independence Day)
  • Revenge (My WIP The Executive’s Hollywood Revenge, Zorro)
  • Redemption (My WIP The Executive’s Hollywood Revenge, Pretty Woman)

Share yours! What favorite themes pop up again and again in your work and in the work you admire?

Books & Movies with Great Thematic Imagery

One of my favorite people, Alexandra Sokoloff, is once again doing a NaNoWriMo prep series on her blog, and the assignment for today is to come up with a theme. Theme is tricky, and I often don’t come up with my theme until after the first draft is done. (And then a do an edit to beef up the thematic elements in the draft, once I’ve got it figured out.) But there’s no harm in trying something new, so I’m wondering if maybe I can come up with my theme before I start my novel this year… maybe.

So assignment number 1? Come up with 10 books & movies that have really great thematic imagery (plot, dialogue, visuals, locations). I don’t have enough time to come up with 10, so I’ll do 5 for now. Here’s my list:
